What Looks Like Crazy....

Monday, January 2, 2012

My friend PK pulled out an old evening bag for New Year's Eve and it it she found the program from when Al and I got married on January 20, 2007. On the program was the quote from Pearl Cleage's book of the same name, "What looks like crazy on an ordinary day, shines a lot like love in the moonlight." I love that quote, just as I loved the book. I love my husband, too. Hard to believe it has been five…

Cyngen, Beginagin

Posted by Cynthia Gentry on January 1, 2012 at 11:00am 0 Comments

It is January 1, 2012, the most embarrassing day of the year to start something new. I mean, it's ill-fated, right? Doomed to be forgotten within a week like 99.987% of all the other New Years' resolutions. Oh, well. I really just need a place to write and my life is all about trying to make cool stuff happen, the website is already paid for, so here I am writing, for today. …

The Eiffel Tower and nearby carousel

Had an idea today while walking down the Left Bank of the river Seine tonight. I thought it would be so cool to have a blog/show called "Beginner's Luck." In it people would start up new things- enterprises, hobbies, campaigns and so on...really cool things and we…

And So I Begin Again

Did you ever read that book about being an artist? The one where the author suggests you write "morning pages" each day to clean out the garbage in your head and connect with your creativity? Oh, I remember, it was The Artist's Way. (I'll add the link later, something's wrong with my keyboard.) Anyway, that's what this is going to be for me...sort of.

Welcome

Making Cool Stuff Happen is about  doing things that make a difference.  It's telling the stories of people who see something that needs to be done, make the decision to do something about it, and then actually do it.

Some projects currently in the works:

International Design Competition: Playable 2010 will encourage designers from around the world to reevaluate how they create playgrounds. This competition is being put on as a partnership between Georgia Institute of Technology and the Atlanta Taskforce on Play. http://www/PlayableDesign.org

atlanta taskforce on play (atop)

The Atlanta Taskforce on Play (ATOP) is a non-profit working to make sure that all children in Atlanta can easily reach a fun, safe and wonder-filled playground. http://www.PlayAtlanta.org

camp twin lakes

Located one hour outside of Atlanta, Camp Twin Lakes is a camp where children facing conditions such as cancer, diabetes, AIDS, organ transplant, and other things, can come for a wonderful camp experience. Making Cool Stuff Happen's Cynthia Gentry organized a design competition for a wheelchair accessible treehouse and totem-pole-lined nature trail and nature program. The treehouse was designed by architect Amy Leathers from Lord-Aeck & Sargent. The totem poles were created by a sculpture class at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta. Both treehouse and nature trail opened in time for camp 2009 and were an enormous hit with the children.
